So, the other day I challenged myself to make one of my greatest fear foods: bread. I have always loved bread, whether it was the heavenly scent of freshly baked buns at the baker’s or my mom’s homemade pita. Hell, I even think my favorite part of pizza was the bread. However, as I got into the dieting cycle of hell, I kept coming across the (false) notion that bread is fattening and it prevents weight loss, and so I began to fear it. I began to only eat dark bread and still very rarely with the fear of losing control or that a tiny bite would make me gain all my weight back. Yet, recently I’ve been wanting to make my own whole-wheat bread (one whose contents I know exactly). I’ve been putting it off, partly due to this fear, but I finally got the courage to hop into the kitchen and bake it.
And this was the result: an extremely simple and delicious bread. No unnecessary additives: just flour, dry yeast, and water (plus an optional pinch of salt). Nothing else, just that. What's better than knowing exactly what's going into your mouth, whether it's in a sandwich or toast?
*Note on salt: the bread won't be bland without salt because whole-wheat flour has more flavor than white flour, but you may want to add a bit depending on your taste preferences. I added just a tiny pinch, which I thought is enough.
If you want something more than just a simple bread loaf, you could also fold some toppings into the batter, such as nuts, raisins, seeds, or anything really. Be creative and please your tastebuds, this bread is amazing with pretty much anything. I added some sesame and flax seeds onto mine and it’s sooo delicious. It tastes almost like a cake, which is surprising since there are no kinds of sweeteners in any of the ingredients.
Let’s jump right into the oven:
Really simple, right?
