Where I come from, chocolate salami is a traditional dessert and it is nearly impossible for someone to grow up here without ever tasting this chocolate treat. However, it wasn't until I gave up on sugar that I realized just how incredibly sweet this dessert is. Seeing it on bakery displays was always nostalgic and appetizing, but wanting to make a vegan version and avoid the negative side effects of sugar, I came up with this recipe.
This chocolate salami is made of 3 easy-to-find ingredients, no sweeteners, vegan, healthy and still just as yummy if not even more so. It is super quick and easy to make and no baking is required, just be sure to store it in the freezer!
This actually made its debut yesterday at a picnic I did for my birthday with some friends. It left them asking for the recipe and they said they loved that isn't too sweet - something not common in our traditional sweets. So, scroll down for this delicious recipe!
Originally, the cookie used in chocolate salami is Bolacha Maria, but these are loaded with sugar and are not vegan, so search for any crunchy sugar-free cookies you can find in your local supermarket. Or, if you'd prefer, use chopped nuts instead of cookies - I haven't tried this, but it might work well. For the chocolate, try to use sugar-free dark chocolate, but since it may be hard to find, use one with the highest percentage possible with sugar alternatives such as stevia. As for the milk, I used coconut milk, but any plant-based milk should be fine.
